What a wonderful day to start an adventure. We had 2 bikes, 3 members and a guest meet at the Shell. After our hellos and a pre ride, off we rolled HWY 17 North. Our 1st comfort stop was just outside Pollocksville. We continued 17 north to HWY 264 in Washington. We ate at Washington on the Water Front. Food was pretty good so I will have to remember this spot for another ride. The group continued 264 east to our 2nd comfort stop; a little rest area with clean bathrooms. One more hour of easy riding and we rolled into The Comfort Inn in Kill Devil Hills.
Now it is time for dinner and refreshments across the street at Millers Seafood and Steak House. 271 miles for the day.
Day 2:
The group is up early and after breakfast we head out to the bikes. Old Man Winter came through in the night and temp has dropped. It was in the high 40’s with a 15 mph wind out of the north, Burrrr. We took HWY 158 to HWY 12 to Cape Hatteras to visit the light house. The place was busy as it was the 1st day they were allowing people to climb the Lighthouse. We took a pass on the climb but it was a beautiful park. We strolled thru the info center and the museum. Pam wants Pizza so we head back to HWY 12 to Angelo’s Pizza. The food was pretty good but a bit pricey. After lunch we roll back to Nags Head Harley Davidson to see the vendors setting up. That ride had the arctic wind in our face so it was a bit brisk to say the least. Pam wants to roll HWY 158 to see what other Vendors are setting up and visit the Outer Banks Harley Davidson so off we go. We only see vendors setting up at Longboards so we kept on going to the Dealership. We find several vendors already open and the stage being set up. Parking was a bit tight but we managed. Ditch finds the Pin Stripping vendor and he has some work done to his now “Bad Ass” Can-Am. Diane has some touch up work done on her Tattoo. Pam and I just stroll around but do not find anything we are looking for.
As we are heading back towards our Hotel, we stop in Walgreens for some things and ask the Cashier where we should eat. She tells us that The Jolly Roger is a must visit and since it is Friday, they have Prime Rib on Special. The food was excellent ! (10 oz Prime Rib for $10.95 but I swear it was 16oz).
It was a long cold day but filled with smiles. 145 miles for the day.
Day 3:
The group decides for Breakfast at the Dunes. The food was really good but the girls enjoyed the gift shop a little more. We head over to Fat Boyz Ice Cream and Grill to meet up with the Greenville Chapter. Big Paul and Pam roll in a little late because of the construction on one of the bridges and informed me that they are missing ½ their group. After 15 minutes or so, 3 more bikes roll in. They tell us that the 4th bike has broke his clutch is waiting on a tow. Once everyone has had a bite to eat, we roll to Nags Head Harley Davidson as 1 group (9 Bikes and 11 Riders). The Leather Vendor and the T-shirt sale table are both open so everyone looks around for a bit. I find some gloves for me. Paul hears from another biker that Outer Banks Harley Davidson is charging $15.00 to park so we all decided to pass on going there. I tell Paul that Longboards has vendors so away we rolled. The place was packed but we manage to find a place to park. I think everyone found something they wanted. Pam, Diane and Ditch all got new coats and I found some Harley Signs.
We say our goodbyes to the Greenville Chapter and we head back to Kill Devil Grill (another must visit tip from the Cashier at Walgreens). She was absolutely right ! The food was excellent and price was not bad. It was packed so we had a little wait but not long. After dinner we head back to the hotel very tired but still smiling.
35 miles for the day.
Day 4:
The plan was to meet up for Breakfast in Hotel Lobby @ 8 am but we run into each other while loading up the Bikes. After breakfast and check out, we are rolling home by 8:30 am. We hit delays at the same bridge that Big Paul ran into a day earlier but only 15 minutes or so. Our 1st comfort stop was at 100 miles right when we turned south on HWY 17. We took our 2nd comfort stop in Maysville to gas up and I asked the group if they would like to have lunch at Cheddars in Jacksonville. I told them it may be a bit crowded as it was Sunday but everyone said that they were not in any hurry. It was packed but the food was great even if a bit slow coming out. After lunch, we said our good byes and headed home.
251 miles for the day
This ride was filled with some great riding, some cold riding, but nothing but smiles throughout all the miles. Thanks to Pam , Mike and Diane for joining me on this adventure. Now I have seen the Cape Hatteras Light House !
Total mileage: 702
